EBONY JEWELWING

Calopteryx maculata

Broad-winged damselfly family (Calopterygidae)

Quick ID: metallic-green damselfly with black wings

Length: 1.5"–2"

These black-winged ebony jewelwing damselflies are brilliantly colored metallic and may shimmer blue in the sunlight. Damselflies can be seen around ponds and streams, often sitting on a twig or blade of grass with their wings folded up. Dragonflies typically hold their wings in a horizontal position when resting. Female ebony jewelwings have a speck of white on their wingtips.
